By the end of today's class, can you...?
- Define what a cell is?
- Name some of the major activities carried out inside a cell?
- Identify four common specialized cells in the human body?
- Identify coordinating examples for each level of organization: cell, tissue, organ, organ system
- Explain how cancer cells are different from healthy cells?
Mind Map | CELL. CANCER. What words, phrases, facts, ideas, and stories do you associate with each of these words? |
Cell Video
As you watch, focus on these two questions:
>> What are three things that happen inside a cell?
>> How are plants different from animal cells?

Cell Stations
Complete all four stations, in any order.
Station 1--Matching: Read descriptions of human body cells, then match them to photos
Station 2--Laptops:
Station 3--Sorting: Read a handout about cellular organization, them use the cutouts to assemble four different chains that show the levels of organization for specific types of cells. After you have checked for correctness, put the cutouts back in the envelope.
Station 4--Handout: Check off each item that you think is made of cells, and explain your reasons in writing.

Station 2--Laptops:
- BBC Bitesize: What Are Cells? Read the article, practice labeling the included diagram, and take the quiz. Please note that the video will not show, but everything else should work.
- BBC Bitesize: Cell Structure Read the article and take the quiz at the end. Please note that the video will not show, but everything else should work.

Notice & Wonder | Compare the two microscopic images of cheek cells and onion cells. What do you notice that distinguishes them from each other? How can you tell which is plant is which is animal? |
Cell Components | Fill in the chart of cell components or organelles, using the handouts of cell diagrams and workbook readings. |
Cancer
As you watch this video, focus on these questions:
>> How do cancer cells behave differently from healthy cells?
>> How does chemotherapy work?
